TMJ
TMJ is the temporomandibular joint. “TMD” stands for “temporomandibular disorder” and refers to problems related to pain and improper functioning of the temporomandibular joints, muscles surrounding the jaw joint, and/or the associated structures in the head, neck, and face including the teeth. TMD is a medical problem that is referred to by many as “TMJ”, which is just an abbreviation for “temporomandibular joint.” TMD can arise due to problems in one’s bite, muscle strain or imbalance, or damage to tissues in the head, neck, and facial area. TMD can often mimic other disorders. TMD can have a single cause or many causes, and can coexist with other related disorders. TMD sufferers may also experience popping, clicking, or grinding sounds from the jaw-joint area. Stiffness, catching, or locking of the lower jaw may also be a sign of TMD problems. A frequent shifting of the bite may indicate a jaw-hinge problem. Healthy habits, such as avoiding stress, and keeping heat on inflamed joints can help with the progression of the problem.
